New Rotary club models enhance connections

By Jessie Harman, chair of the Rotary International Membership Committee and a member of the Rotary Club of Wendouree Breakfast, Victoria, Australia https://blog.rotary.org/2019/06/11/new-rotary-clubmodels- enhance-connections/ NEW ROTARY CLUB MODELS ENHANCE CONNECTIONS Rotary’s new strategic plan is underpinned by four key priorities – to increase our impact, expand our reach, enhance participant engagement, and increase our ability to adapt. The emergence of new club models is evidence that Rotary clubs and districts are working actively to advance these priorities. These new club models represent an opportunity to connect with a more diverse group of individuals – particularly those who are unable or unwilling to join our traditional clubs. While new club models have been emerging for some time, the 2016 Council on Legislation decision to promote flexibility and innovation has arguably accelerated their development. At the present time, it’s possible to recognize at least

Meet the 2019-20 RI president

For nearly 40 years, Mark Daniel Maloney and his family have demonstrated that  Rotary connects the world. Now the self-described ‘cheerful traveler’ embarks on  the next phase of his life’s journey: serving as Rotary International’s new  president. THE PAST IS PROLOGUE It’s two weeks before Christmas in northern Alabama, and the Rotary Club of Decatur is in full Yuletide mode. Last Saturday, working alongside members of the Church at Stone River, the club members treated more than 70 children to a pancake breakfast and a shopping trip to Target. Now at the club’s Monday meeting, the Austin Junior High jazz band is rocking the seasonal songs: “Santa Baby,” “Feliz Navidad,” “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” — though with temperatures nudging up against 40 degrees Fahrenheit, it feels, for early December, borderline balmy. Once the band wraps up, club President Larry Payne announces, “Now, back by unpopular demand: Where in the world is Mark?” The crowd hoots and hollers with amiable scorn. The

How I Went from Zero Passion to Abundance and Fulfillment

How I Went from Zero Passion to Abundance and Fulfillment 18 months ago I found myself getting ready for work, as I have done for the last 30 years, asking myself; Am I doing what I have been put on this earth to do? What is my purpose? What is my passion? I couldn’t answer any of these questions with any clarity. That both scared and annoyed me, I had never given this any mind until now, why? I moved to Australia with my young son of 4 years old and was so excited with all the opportunities that I was presented with, life was exciting. I went from one exciting job to the next and 7 years later I found a job that was to take me on my most challenging and rewarding journey for the next 15 years. I began my journey in the corporate space in a very male dominated industry. I had made it, but soon discovered I wasn’t fulfilled with my success and as Tony Robbins says, “Success without fulfillment is ultimate failure. So I started on a journey that I know will never end and will alw

World Environment Day

By helping to protect our natural world, we support all of our areas of focus. Trees and forests contribute greatly to the well being of our societies and economies, reducing soil erosion, and maintaining oxygen The state of the environment underpins, and has the power to impact, all six areas of focus. A vital component to humanity’s well-being, we increasingly need to recognise the environment’s elemental role in creating truly sustainable and lasting change. The opportunity to collaborate with UN Environment — the United Nations agency that serves as the global authority on the environment — is well-timed for those who want to make a di ff erence at the local level. By helping to protect our natural world, we support all of our areas of focus — and take action to create positive, lasting change — across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves. What is World Environment Day? World Environment Day takes place every year on 5 June. It is the United Nations’ flagshi

A Bright Spark Moment

February 23, 2019, was a monumental day for us. After much hard work, we were granted our club charter. As the charter president of the Rotary Club of Wyndham Harbour, I have had a profound experience on this journey. My “bright spark” moment was when I realized I belonged in a new Rotary platform  What does a fresh perspective and new energy bring? The past 4 months since our charter approval has revealed amazing results… People with fresh eyes think outside the box.  Fresh Eyes & Fresh Energy By empowering our new Rotarians (members) to be voices for doing everything we can in Rotary, not just what is comfortable or easy, our members are advocates for thoughtful, positive, and lasting change. There is limitless power in fresh energy. In the club environment, we are creating, all our members are encouraged to think big and be innovative people with fresh perspectives. Our club members come from unique stories and lives, having lived through an array of experiences. Yet, they also
